### Statistical Mechanics Lecture 1 of 29

In this lesson the professor makes a brief introduction of the course and said that the course will be divided in three parts, thermodynamics, random variables and statistical mechanics, each part will be of 10 lectures. The text book for the first part will be the Enrico Fermi Thermodynamics book but any book in thermodynamics will be good. He starts the lesson by introducing the laws of thermodynamics (see below) and focusing on the zeroth and first laws. Then he introduces the equation of state for the ideal gas and the definition of Intensive and extensive variables and the reversible transformations. As an example he calculates the work done by an ideal gas expanding from volume VA to volume VB in a isothermal transformation (constant temperature). In the last part of the lesson he introduces the Carnot cycle and calculates the total work done and the efficiency in the cycle for the case of a monoatomic ideal gas.
